What Is a Hydrosol? A Beginner's Guide to Nature's Best-Kept Skincare Secret
If you've spent any time exploring natural skincare or aromatherapy, you may have come across the word "hydrosol" and wondered what on earth it actually is. You're not alone. Even though hydrosols have been used for thousands of years, most people have never heard the term — or they've used hydrosols their whole lives without knowing it.
At InspireByMK, hydrosols are one of our most unique and most beloved product lines. We steam-distill every one of our hydrosols ourselves, in small batches, from pure organic botanicals. So we get asked all the time: what exactly is a hydrosol, and why should I be using it?
Today, we're answering that question.
- Hydrosols, Defined
A hydrosol is the water that's left behind after steam-distilling plant material to extract essential oils. As steam passes through fresh flowers, herbs, or other botanicals, it pulls out two things: the essential oils (which float on top) and the aromatic water (which is gathered below). That aromatic water is your hydrosol.

They all mean the same thing.
How Hydrosols Are Different from Essential Oils
If hydrosols and essential oils come from the same distillation process, why are they different? Two reasons: strength and safety.
Essential oils are extremely concentrated. A single drop of rose essential oil might require thousands of rose petals to produce. That concentration makes essential oils powerful — but it also means they can irritate skin if applied directly and need to be diluted in a carrier oil.
Hydrosols, on the other hand, are gentle. They carry the same therapeutic properties as their essential oil counterparts but in a much milder, water-based form. That means you can spray a hydrosol directly onto your skin, hair, or even into the air without diluting it first. Hydrosols are safe enough to use every day on sensitive skin, on children, and around pets.
The Most Popular Hydrosols (and What They Do)
Each hydrosol has its own unique benefits based on the plant it came from. Here are some of the most popular hydrosols and what they're traditionally used for.
Rose Hydrosol — Often called "rose water," rose hydrosol is the most classic and beloved hydrosol of all time. Soothing, hydrating, and emotionally uplifting, it's been used as a natural toner and facial mist for thousands of years. Click Here for our Rose Hydrosol
Lavender Hydrosol — Calming, gentle, and sleep-supporting. Lavender hydrosol works as a natural toner for sensitive skin, a calming pillow spray, and a relaxing aromatherapy mist. Click Here for our Lavender Hydrosols

How to Use Hydrosols in Your Daily Routine
The best part about hydrosols? They have endless uses. Here are our favorites.
As a Facial Toner — Mist your face after cleansing, morning and night. Hydrosols balance your skin's pH and prep it for moisturizer — without the harsh alcohol found in most commercial toners.
As a Pillow or Linen Spray — Mist lavender hydrosol on your pillow before bed for natural sleep support. Spray rose or floral hydrosols on towels and sheets to keep linens lightly fragranced.
As an Aromatherapy Mist — Spray into the air for instant aromatherapy. Different hydrosols offer different emotional benefits — lavender for calm, eucalyptus for clarity, rose for emotional balance, cedar for grounding.
As a Hair Refresher — Lightly mist your hair to add hydration and a natural floral scent. Rosemary hydrosol can be misted on the scalp daily to support hair health.
As a Smoke-Free Smudge Spray — Use white sage or cedar hydrosol to cleanse your space and energy without burning anything.
As a Hydrating Body Spray — Mist your body after showering to feel cool, hydrated, and lightly fragranced.
Why Choose Handcrafted Hydrosols
Not all hydrosols are created equal. Many commercial hydrosols are diluted with water, mixed with preservatives, or contain synthetic fragrance oils to extend shelf life. At InspireByMK, our hydrosols are pure — just steam-distilled plant water in a bottle. That's it.
We distill all our hydrosols in small batches at home, from pure organic botanicals. The result is a hydrosol that's fresher, more potent, and more aligned with the natural traditions hydrosols come from. Shop All of our Hydrosols
